Following devastating Hurricane Andrew in August 1992, the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church (BCMC) became actively involved in providing relief to Bahamians affected by disasters. The damage caused by Reconstruction on Cat Island after FloydHurricane Andrew exceeded $250 million dollars.  Within days teams were dispatched to Eleuthera to assess the damage and take supplies to the settlements. Sister United Methodist Churches in the U.S. assisted with donations of money, materials, and most of all, labor through their Volunteers in Mission program to help rebuild homes and communities.

With the passing of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the BCMC once again activated its disaster response committee to assess the damage and bring relief to those affected. Again, working in partnership with churches, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and government ministries, the BCMC's Disaster Response Committee reached out to individuals on the islands of Eleuthera, Abaco and Cat. The United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) once again donated labor and funding. In Cat Island Disaster Recovery Volunteersand Abaco the BCMC worked side-by-side with the Bahamas Disaster Relief Committee, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), other churches and NGO's. Again, this was made possible by the generous donations of such organizations as The Rotary Clubs of Nassau, 100 Jamz Radio, Archer's Nursery, The United Methodist Church and many others.

After the passing of Hurricane Michelle in November 2001 the BCMC appointed Mr. Shaun Ingraham, as Coordinator of Disaster Relief. During that time the church became increasingly aware of the need to invest in building more sustainable communities that would be better prepared to withstand hurricanes – Methodist Habitat was born! This dynamic program constantly seeks new vibrant ways to assist those in need and helps to create more sustainable communities.

BMH's past Director was Mike Fastzkie and his wife Shannan, with their two youngest children Bess 13 and Lydia 6. They arrived on Eleuthera on August 31st, 2004 just two days before Hurricane Frances hit the Bahamas. Their family served a one year term as missionaries with United Methodist Volunteers in Mission in partnership with The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church. We thank Mike and the rest of his family for their dedication to BMH and the communities they served. The whole family is missed tremendously and we wish you the best back in Greenville, SC. Mike and Shannan have two older children, Megan 22 and Nathan 19, who work and attend college in South Carolina.
